Have you ever struggled to find the right words in prayer? Or felt distracted when you sit down to talk with God? Prayer is a powerful gift, but sometimes we can't find words to describe our hearts while our hearts long for a deeper, more creative way to connect. That’s where art journaling comes in. Art journaling isn’t just about making something pretty—it’s about creating a sacred space where color, words, and prayer meet.
What is Art Journaling?
Art journaling is simply using a notebook or sketchbook as a place to combine images, words, and personal reflection. You might paint, sketch, collage, or write—all in one space. Think of it as a visual diary, but instead of focusing only on your daily life, you’re recording your walk with God. And don’t worry—you don’t need to be an artist to do this. The beauty of art journaling is that it’s about expression, not perfection.
Why Combine Prayer and Art?
Prayer is our conversation with God. Sometimes those conversations flow freely, but other times our hearts are heavy, restless, or wordless. Art gives us another language—a way to express what words can’t always capture.
The Bible reminds us to “pray without ceasing” (1 Thessalonians 5:17, NLT). Using creativity as part of prayer can help us live this out, weaving prayer into everyday moments. When you use art in prayer, you engage more of your senses. Your hands, eyes, and mind join together to focus on God in a tangible, creative way. You never know - your creativity might be part of your calling.
How Art Journaling Deepens Prayer
It Slows You Down.
In our fast-paced world, it’s easy to rush through prayer. Art journaling invites you to linger. As you draw, paint, or letter scripture, you naturally slow your breathing and settle into stillness before God.It Engages Your Senses.
Colors, textures, and shapes add a richness to prayer time. They make your prayer experience more immersive, helping you focus your heart and quiet your mind.It Creates a Visual Record of Faith.
Over time, your prayer journal becomes a testimony of God’s faithfulness. Looking back, you’ll see prayers answered, scripture that sustained you, and evidence of your growth in Him. Journaling is a way of recording what God is doing in your life.It Reveals Hidden Emotions.
Sometimes you don’t realize what’s weighing on you until it shows up on the page. Through colors, shapes, or even scribbles, your journal can become a safe place to bring those unspoken feelings to God. Psalm 62:8 (NLT) reminds us: “Pour out your heart to him, for God is our refuge.” If you can't find the words to say, maybe images would better convey your thoughts and feelings, helping you process. It Invites Scripture Reflection.
Writing or illustrating a verse helps it take root in your heart. The act of drawing or lettering scripture becomes a meditation in itself, allowing God’s Word to soak deeper into your spirit. Joshua 1:8 (NLT) says: “Study this Book of Instruction continually. Meditate on it day and night so you will be sure to obey everything written in it.” Art journaling can be one way to live this out.
Practical Ways to Start
Getting started doesn’t have to be complicated. All you need is a journal and something to write or draw with. You can add paints, markers, or collage materials if you’d like, but simplicity works just as well.
Write a scripture verse that speaks to you and decorate the page with colors or doodles.
Use shapes and symbols to represent your prayers.
Create a gratitude page filled with words or images of what you’re thankful for.
Sketch how you’re feeling and invite God into that moment.
Remember, your art journal isn’t meant for anyone else’s eyes—it’s a private conversation between you and God.
Art journaling won’t replace traditional prayer, but it can enrich it. It’s a practice that helps you slow down, reflect, and connect with God in a fresh, meaningful way. The pages you create become a living testimony of your journey with Him—a colorful story of faith, prayer, and growth.
So grab a journal, pick up a pen, and invite God into the process. He delights in your creativity because He’s the One who placed it inside you. Ephesians 2:10 (NLT) reminds us: “For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.”
